According to Ethnologue in 2020, Arabic is one of the most spoken languages, with more than 420 million speakers in the world. Over 350,000 live in Canada, and Vancouver is no exception. Today, the city is home to one of Canada's largest Lebanese and Iranian communities, for example, who decided to make Vancouver their home because of the city’s reputation for ethnic diversity and tolerance of other cultures. The 2011 census recorded over 15,000 people of Arab origin living in Vancouver and they have shaped the cultural landscape city. From enjoying the Arab orchestra to participating in the annual Arab Festival, the Arab culture is prevalent throughout Vancouver for you to enjoy. Start learning Arabic not only to connect with this local community on a whole new level but also to increase your cultural awareness on a more intimate level by understanding the language and speaking with those that know it best in their own tongue. Contact us at Language Trainers and let’s get started!
Learn Arabic for Culture: If you would like to experience and learn more about the fascinating Arab culture without leaving Vancouver, you will find many instances for doing so. For instance, you can participate in the annual Arab Festival that takes place every December, where you will find live Arab music, poetry recitals, dance performances, storytelling and a peek into the many Middle Eastern cultures. This event celebrates the anniversary of Arabic’s approval to become one of the six official languages of the United Nations General Assembly, which originally occurred on the 18th of December 1973. Attend and welcome the rhythmic structure of Arabic poetry into your ears, as reciters celebrate famous poets from various parts of the Arab world, such as Efemeral, Farah Rawas and Seemi Ghazi. After taking some lessons with us at Language Trainers, you will be able to understand everything the reciters say and the cultural importance of their expressions.
Learn Arabic for Studies: If you are looking to pursue higher education in Arabic, you will be pleased to know that the University of British Columbia offers a BA in Middle Eastern Studies. This program will provide you with a coherent grounding in the history, cultures, artistic production and one or more of the languages of the MENA region. In this course, you will explore everything about Arab culture, including its architecture, Islamic art, film and more. In case you want to enrol, consider that the university asks that you either have a basic understanding of Arabic or that you take a 6-month course before starting with the program. If you don’t want to lose precious time, then contact us today and we will adapt our Exam Preparation course for you, so you will be ready to demonstrate your Arabic proficiency from day one.
Learn Arabic for Social: Sign up for a course with us and you will also be able to connect with the local community of Arabic speakers. For example, you can join the Vancouver Arabic Social Meetup, a language exchange group that provides a stimulating environment for sharing and learning more about the Arabic culture and language. The organizers usually host local seminars and courses, too, attended by people from Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Syria and United Arab Emirates, as well as non-Arabic people with different levels of language proficiency. Another option is to join the Arabs in Vancouver group, which brings together language learners of different ages and backgrounds. From dinner gatherings to bike competitions, you will be able to have a lot of fun while practising what you learn with us at Language Trainers!
