The Italian community in Nova Scotia is among the oldest in Canada. And Halifax in particular, given its strategic location as one of North America's most important trade hubs, holds a significant place in the history of Italian immigration, culture, and language. According to the 2016 census more than 1.5 million Canadians claim full or partial Italian ancestry and Halifax is home to about 13,500 of them. While this number is relatively small in comparison to other Canadian cities, those of Italian descent along with the Italian language and culture have been fundamental in shaping Halifax's social, economic, and political life. So, learning Italian is crucial to be able to connect with the local community on another level, explore their culture and improve your job prospects.
Why Study Italian in Halifax
Learn Italian for Work & Studies: The majority of the Italian immigrants who arrived in Nova Scotia at the turn of the twentieth century were recruited to work in the mining, steel, forestry, and fishing industries. Soon thereafter, merchants, and shopkeepers filed in, starting their businesses predominantly in Halifax and today, there are many companies of Italian origin in the city. Some of them are The Italian Market, the Bertossi Group and Burberry, which are looking to hire blingual speakers. If you are not actively job-seeking but would like to participate in an exchange program instead, Dalhouse University offers two study abroad opportunities to students who have a couple of years of experience with the Italian language. At Language Trainers, we can help you increase your language skills so you can take this course with confidence!.
Learn Italian for Culture: Work aside, Halifax is the heart of the Italian cultural activity that goes on in Nova Scotia. The Italian Canadian Cultural Association (ICCA) on Agricola St was founded over 40 years ago and has been a key supporter and sponsor of Italian cultural initiatives in Halifax. Every year, they host numerous dinner parties and social events promoting Italian cultural heritage and they publish a bilingual English-Italian newsletter called La Voce on a seasonal-basis. Other Italian cultural events include the Halifax Summer of Opera Festival (HSOF)—a month-long series that started in 2008. In 2017, this festival featured 15 performances of 3 main stage operas as well as concerts, lectures and masterclasses in front of hundreds of people. These events make Halifax an important focal point not only for the local Italian community, but also for those who have an affinity for all things Italian, including music aficionados, art enthusiasts and, of course, Italian language learners like you.
Learn Italian for Social: If you are interested in meeting new people with an interest in the Italian language, you can join the Italian Conversation Meetup Group for basic and fluent speakers who share a passion for the Italian language, culture, food and fashion. Or you can share Italian movies with your friends by attending the annual the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival on Hollis St, an eight-day celebration of film, media, and music that screens several Italian movies. In 2018, more than 2,000 people attended the festival. You will be able to watch these movies without reading the English subtitles after taking an Italian course with us and impress your friends with your knowledge of Italian!
