Calgary is one of the most multicultural and diverse cities in Canada, with citizens who speak more than 100 different languages as their first or second language! And German is one of the most common: according to the Census Metropolitan Area of 2016, there are more than 200,000 German speakers in Alberta, and 10,000 of them live in Calgary. Germany and Calgary have a long-standing relationship, ever since Alberta established an international office in Munich in 2001. Also, in 2009, Alberta signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for science, research and education co-operation with Bavaria; an agreement that is still in force today. So, if you would like to apply for a new international job or get to know one of the many diverse cultures in the city, studying German in Calgary is a great idea. Taking a German course will also allow you to enjoy Oktoberfest like never before, make new friends with people who share a passion for the German language, and make the most out of your trips to German-speaking countries!
Learn German for Work: In 2020, Alberta’s exports to Germany averaged $190.4 million, consisting mainly of bituminous coal, canola oil, machinery and vehicle parts and accessories. Naturally, then, learning German and working with these products and resources will expand your professional opportunities! If you are actively job seeking, it is a good idea to contact the German Business Centre on 6th Avenue SW. Founded in 2001, this is an institution that supports companies and entrepreneurs who would like to connect with fellow business people from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Also, there are many companies, such as WestJet and Ultrasonic Detection, who are always looking for bilingual speakers. Knowledge of German, then, will help you stand out beside competing candidates.
For Social: You may also want to use your German in a social context, so you can also consider joining the Calgary German Language Meetup, a group that focuses on German get togethers around Calgary. They usually meet at traditional German restaurants such as Wurst on 4 Street, a stylish pub with craft beers and German cuisine where you can sample schnitzels and pretzels and impress your new friends with your German pronunciation! And if you are more interested in travel, you will be glad to know there are daily direct flights to German-speaking countries via Air Canada and Lufthansa. In a little over 9 hours, you could be in Frankfurt or Berlin, having some strudel and speaking to the locals with the German pronunciation you learn with us at Language Trainers!
For Culture: Calgary honours its German and Austrian heritage by hosting themed events all year long. For example, the Austrian Canadian Cultural Centre on 11 Street organizes the traditional Christkindlmarkt (or Christmas Market), where you can find Austrian handicrafts, homemade baking and share a traditional, delicious lunch with the club members! Also, the German Canadian Club on 37 Avenue aims to promote the German language, culture, heritage and customs, and they do so by organizing the annual Oktoberfest! Dress in your dirndl and leap into lederhosen for Calgary's authentic three-day Oktoberfest. So, gather your friends and join in this authentic Bavarian event, where you will be able to sample award-winning German-style beers and pretzels from Munich and participate in beer-holding competitions and games! Impress the attendees with your German and make the most out of this fantastic event!
