Portuguese is the world’s 6th most-spoken language, with an estimated 220 million native speakers worldwide, and almost 450,000 of them live in Canada, according to the 2011 census. Vancouver, in particular, has a growing population of people of Portuguese origin, which in 2016 amounted to 20,000, according to a report published by the Canadian government. Their cultural influence on the city is undeniable: in Vancouver, there is a Portuguese Catholic Church, the Portuguese Canadian Senior's Society (among other institutions) and several folk-dance groups and traditional restaurants. Studying Portuguese is a great idea if you would like to experience the Luso and Brazilian cultures on a different level, understand menus in Portuguese and make the most out of your trips to Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. Get in touch with us at Language Trainers today and we will design a program to fit your language requirements and abilities!
Learn Portuguese for Work & Studies: Learning Portuguese can open many professional opportunities for you. If you are actively looking for a new job, you can get in touch with the Brazilian Trade Promotion Sector on Burrard Street, an institution whose mission it is to promote Brazilian exports to Canada, attract investment and tourists to Brazil, and provide support to companies who would like to enter the Brazilian market. We are certain you will be able to impress them with your Portuguese after a few classes with us! And those who would like to take up higher education in Portuguese will find many opportunities to do so. For example, you can enrol in the Portuguese program at the University of British Columbia, designed to enhance active communication skills and to develop an appreciation of the various cultures throughout the Portuguese-speaking world.
Learn Portuguese for Culture: The Portuguese language also serves as a gateway to the rich diversity of Lusophone history, music, literature, cinema and art present in Vancouver. If you would like to experience some Portuguese culture in your city, you can join the Portuguese Club of Vancouver on Commercial Dr, who organize “Friday Lunches” so that their members can get to know each other while speaking in Portuguese. And you can also celebrate the Festa De Nossa Senhora De Fátima every October. The festivities include traditional Portuguese food, a bazaar and folklore dancing, not to mention providing the perfect opportunity to socialize with other Portuguese speakers. Even the masses are delivered in Portuguese, so take advantage of these fantastic opportunities to put your language skills to use! Like Portugal, Brazil has also contributed immensely to the city’s culture through soccer, music, cinema and literature. For example, the Brazilian Community Association on 12th Avenue, founded in 1996, promotes the Brazilian culture by organizing thrilling cultural events, such as Brazilfest Vancouver, Carnaval Brasileiro, Festa Junina and more!
Learn Portuguese for Social: Those who would like to attend themed events to get to know people with a similar passion for Portuguese can attend the Annual Bazaar organized by the Portuguese Cultural Centre on Imperial Street. And if you would like to make some new Brazilian friends, you should join the InterNations’ group for Brazilians in Vancouver. They get together once a week to practise the language, share recommendations (for example, where to go for a good feijoada) and have some fun! Don’t hesitate to attend the meetings to practise what you learn with us at Language Trainers outside of the classroom!
